Practical Implications of Insecticide Resistance in Culicine Mosquitoes

چکیده

The control/eradication of culicines is receivi-ng increasag attention, since these mosquitoes are not only carriers of important diseases, such as filariasis, yellow fever, haemorrhagic fever, but have also been incrimtnated as important carriers of other arbo viruses of man and‘animals. F’urthermore, these mosquitoes are a great nuisance since they feed on man with great avidity. Control of .culicine mosquitoes is presenting. a problem since the common species are ubiquitous with high reproductive potential. With increasing urbanizalion general sanitation is lagging behind in most of the developing countries, with the result that some of the culicine species, especially the Culexpipiens complex, are breeding in large numbers. The current methods for control of these -species are based largely on the use of insecticides. The adult mosquitoes, particularly in the Culex pipiens complex, are naturally refractory to chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and develop resistance fairly rapidly to these compounds; in addition, recent reports indicate that the species are developing resistance to other groups of insecticides, such as organophosphorus compounds. Larvicides cari be used in certain situations, but there are increasing cases of resistance to insecticides even in the larval stage. The present status of resistance in culicine mosquitoes is briefly summarized as follows :

Evaluation of bifenthrin treated mosquito nets against anopheline and culicine mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The main rural malaria vector Anopheles culicifacies has developed resistance to dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT), hexachloro cyclo hexane (HCH) and malathion in the state of Haryana in northern India. An alternative synthetic pyrethroid insecticide bifenthrin was therefore evaluated on mosquito nets against anopheline and culicine mosquitoes, in two villages Ja...

The impact of insecticide resistance on Culex pipiens immunity

Because of their role as vectors of diseases, the evolution of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes has been intensively investigated. Insecticide resistance is associated to a wide range of pleiotropic effects on several key life-history traits of mosquitoes such as longevity and behavior. However, despite its potential implications in pathogen transmission, the effects of insecticide resistan...

How to Make Evolution-Proof Insecticides for Malaria Control

Insecticides are one of the cheapest, most effective, and best proven methods of controlling malaria, but mosquitoes can rapidly evolve resistance. Such evolution, first seen in the 1950s in areas of widespread DDT use, is a major challenge because attempts to comprehensively control and even eliminate malaria rely heavily on indoor house spraying and insecticide-treated bed nets. Current strat...

Blocking the evolution of insecticide-resistant malaria vectors with a microsporidian

Finding a way to block the evolution insecticide resistance would be a major breakthrough for the control of malaria. We suggest that this may be possible by introducing a stress into mosquito populations that restores the sensitivity of genetically resistant mosquitoes and that decreases their longevity when they are not exposed to insecticide. We use a mathematical model to show that, despite...

Slowing the evolution of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes: a mathematical model

A big problem in malaria control is the rapidity with which mosquitoes can develop resistance to insecticides. The possibility of creating evolution-proof insecticides is therefore of considerable interest. Biologists have suggested that effective malaria control, with only weak selection for insecticide resistance, could be achieved if insecticides target only old mosquitoes that have already ...
